When Are We Going To Get Mad As Hell?

"Legacy", Acrylic on foil and canvas

This is a painting I did back in 2018. Back when I was working with aluminum foil. That line at the bottom between the blue water line and the tree roots is plastic. It’s plastic, preventing the tree from getting water and nutrients.

I recently saw an article about the Enbridge Oil Company. A judge had to force them to pay more than five millions dollars to a Native American Tribe. The order from the U.S. District Judge came after members of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa told him during a hearing in Madison that the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline is at immediate risk of being exposed by erosion and rupturing on their land. The judge also gave Enbridge Oil three years to shut those parts down. THREE YEARS! It probably only took them one to build it.

The judge's order said a rupture on tribal land "would unquestionably be a public nuisance" but denied that the threat is imminent, and said a shutdown would likely "spark at least temporary shortages and increased prices for refined gas, propane and butane in the Upper Midwest and Eastern Canada, creating hardships, specially for the poor and other economically challenged households." Because, of course it would. Who else suffers for big oil?

As of 2017, Line 5, which is the part of the pipeline being removed by court order, had spilled at least 1.1 million gallons since 1967. Not only that but, big oil has so much money that they could probably tie this up in court for decades.

I also recently saw a great quote attributed to Kurt Vonnegut that I wish I had written down because now a Google search isn’t finding it. It went something like, humanity won’t save itself because it isn’t cost effective. He, of course, said it more eloquently.

Meanwhile, let's just keep condemning movies and drag shows.
