I recently came across a video by an artist who shared his version of advice for artists. One point that he did make that I agree with is that sometimes having too many choices can be crippling.
There’s that example of the jelly company that gave away free sample tastings of their product to promote sales. They manufactured many different kinds of jelly but when it came to sales, they found that less is more. By giving consumers less choices they actually sold more jelly. We’re all familiar with the term “analysis paralysis”. At some point you just have to make a choice.
So, I’ve started creating these small pieces. I buy cheap, hobby acrylic paint and use a small canvas board. I can try anything that moves me without compromising my art series. My “serious” artwork. I literally just poured paint onto the canvas. One thing I would change already would be the white background. Next time I would paint the canvas first with a color. By doing the work is how we learn.
This is also a great way for anyone wanting to dip their toes into the practice of creating art. Unlike what I’ve done here (and probably will on Instagram) you need never show it to anyone. It’s OK if it’s not perfect. Or even good. It can be our little secret!
