Helping Myself To Grow

The colors of nature! How I love them. I love all things nature. In fact, I have attempted to grow a garden for a few years now. I live in Central Florida where the soil is mostly sand.

I learned a few things about gardening that I’m willing to share. Mostly because I think everyone should grow some edible plants even if it's just a few herbs.

One of the things I’ve learned is that they’re not kidding when they say you should have your soil tested. That’s, of course, if you plan on planting in the soil. Even with manure and compost, my vegetables still look puny. It’s much easier to plant in pots with good potting soil. The plants have to be watered every day and don’t forget to fertilize (with organic fertilizer, of course).

If you do decide to plant in your yard or property, know which plants will thrive in your soil. Don’t plant things you won’t eat even if they grow well. I planted arugula and it grew well, but I don’t like it even though it’s very good for you.

Then there’s the pests. The bugs and slugs and whatever else likes what you’re growing. Neem oil works pretty well but you have to use it a lot.

So, all-in-all gardening is rewarding but it is work. But you probably already knew that. Just go to your nearest big box store and get some herbs and grow them. They’re easy and great for adding flavor to foods. Mother Nature will love you for it.
