Take A Shine To It, 24"x24", Acrylic on canvas, pre-organizational skills
I’ve always considered myself to be a fairly organized person. Back in the day when I worked in the corporate world, I actually prided myself in my ability to prioritize. Later as I developed my art career, I didn’t think it was as necessary.
Then I came across Tiago Forte’s book Building A Second Brain.
First of all, there’s a LOT of information to digest. His system of digital note taking seems overwhelming at first and his least expensive online course is $500. Honestly, I just started skimming through the book out of curiosity thinking, this must only apply to working people with families and busy lives. (I’m “retired” now and my children have families of their own.)
Then I came across the part where he writes about Twyla Tharp's methodology. If you’re not familiar with her, she wrote the book The Creative Habit. I always wanted to read it but just never have. She uses a method for her creative projects of creating boxes for each project. Every piece of information or inspiration or resource goes into the box. It made me realize that this is actually something that I need.
As I’ve said before, I didn’t grow up in the digital age. Learning a note taking app seems almost daunting to me. I decided to give it a month to see how well I do with it but, there’s a good chance I might stick to the old-fashioned method of using an actual box.
I do think this is something that many artists and anyone for that matter. I recommend the book.
