Being Grateful

Writer's picture: Shirley FoxShirley Fox

In The Middle, 20"x24", Acrylic on Canvas

One of my favorite duties as grandmother is to dog sit for the grand dogs. I’m here at my son's house taking care of his two pit bulls. (Boy, do I feel safe!) But, they’re sweet dogs and I don’t mind helping out. It gives them a chance to have a much needed vacation.

It also gives me a chance to watch a lot of TV. More than I care to admit. As I was surfing I came across a film of a talk given by Brene Brown. As I’ve admitted before, I am a self-help junkie. This particular talk is on “daring greatly”. In case you haven’t seen it, she talks about how being vulnerable is actually being brave. This was good to hear since I feel like I’m vulnerable every time I write a blog post.

I believe that to be an artist is to be brave. What’s more vulnerable than putting some of yourself “out there” with every painting or sculpture or book or song? I’ve been in shows where I’ve overheard criticism of my work and let me tell you, it sucks! Rejection is hard and I don’t know that any of us are actually immune. At least not anyone with any amount of soul.

That said, If it’s in your blood to create art, you’ll keep on doing it. I am grateful that I discovered my passion for making art. I’m grateful that I was brave enough to be vulnerable.
